As the 1070 Director, Business Applications, you will report to the 0994 Executive Director, Enterprise Systems in the Department of Technology (DoT). You will lead a dedicated team of software engineers, functional architects, and business analysts to ensure that the district’s business applications, specifically our employee and financial systems, are accessible, reliable, flexible, and secure to meet the diverse business and operational needs of the SFUSD community. We want a collaborative leader who can provide direction, structure, and support focused on operational excellence, data accuracy, system integration, technical innovation, and high-quality service aligned to SFUSD’s Service Standards.

We expect our 1070 Director, Business Applications to:

  • Lead and project manage the technical delivery of business-focused technology tools and systems for SFUSD, inclusive of overseeing the system development and management lifecycle and ongoing system administration and data management functions
  • Serve as the technical lead for SFUSD’s implementation of its new human capital and payroll management system, SAP SuccessFactors called EMPowerSF and successfully guide SFUSD through the technical transition from its legacy system to a new, cloud-based platform
  • Create infrastructure to support the management and operations of SFUSD’s business systems, inclusive of process design and improvement, automation, data/analytics, issue resolution and escalation, training resources, tracking tools and communication templates
  • Supervise, coach, and support staff within the Business Applications team, taking a service leadership approach to supervision and ensuring that team members understand the interdependency of delivering and managing technology systems in service of a coherent technology experience
  • Builds strong working relationships with SFUSD school leaders, division chiefs, and business teams, particularly human resources, budget and business services, and labor, to help ensure that district’s business systems meet the needs of the SFUSD community
  • Manage relationships with vendors and partners that provide application and technology services for SFUSD to ensure products, systems, and tools effectively integrate with and support the business functions of the district
  • Effectively communicate and manage change efforts for SFUSD business applications, collaborating with business partners and DoT teams to help ensure effective system/tool adoption by users and sustainable management for DoT and district teams

  • A proven record of effectively planning, organizing, and allocating resources to take action and achieve goals
  • Strong analytic and deep systems-thinking necessary to interpret data to inform goals and strategy, as well as build infrastructure and systems where none exist
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with senior level district staff and colleagues
  • Experience and success with effective written and verbal communication, facilitation and presentations to large groups and a variety of audiences (e.g., staff meetings, executive briefings, public board meetings, memos, district-wide messaging)
  • Ability to work effectively across multiple functions, roles, and differences within a complex organization
  • Experience managing employee information systems, particularly PeopleSoft and SAP SuccessFactors
  • Master’s degree in computer science, information systems management or related field

Minimum Qualifications

Education: An associate degree in computer science or a closely related field from an accredited college or university OR its equivalent in terms of total course credits/units [i.e., at least sixty (60) semester or ninety (90) quarter credits/units with a minimum of twenty (20) semester or thirty (30) quarter credits/units in computer science or a closely-related field].

Experience: Seven (7) years of experience in system administration, information systems development, maintenance and support, or information technology project management, including two (2) years of supervisory experience

Substitution: Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of two (2) years). One (1) year is equivalent to thirty (30) semester units / forty-five (45) quarter units with a minimum of 10 semester / 15 quarter units in computer science or a closely related field.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: Essential duties require the following physical skills and work requirements: May require sufficient strength and coordination for lifting, pushing, pulling and/or carrying the weight of computer equipment. Requires bending, stooping and/or crawling in order to install or repair computer or printer cables. Requires hand/eye coordination for semi-skilled movements, such as taking apart casings, installing parts and reconnecting computers, and keyboard use. Involves extensive VDT exposure.

SFUSD offers a competitive salary of $120,095 - $163,453/annually commensurate with experience in a similar position.
