As the Cyber Security Architect, you will report to a Deputy Chief Technology Officer in the Department of Technology and serve as the lead solutions architect and technical implementer for SFUSD’s cyber security roadmap. In this role the Cyber Security architect will develop, implement, monitor, and maintain cyber security programs and activities for SFUSD by identifying and addressing critical systems and digital assets; maintaining cyber security attack mitigation and incident response capability; and providing assistance to higher level leadership.

Demonstrate a Leadership Mindset

  • Strategically execute projects and tasks in SFUSD’s cyber security roadmap.
  • Develop and implement strategic communications and change management plans with the ability to garner buy-in and support across the organization to implement cyber security tasks effectively.
  • Facilitate and/or manage the development and approval of technical and functional requirements that balance resource constraints and user-centered design to strengthen cyber security in SFUSD.
  • Develop training plans for DoT staff and for all SFUSD stakeholders for successful implementation.
  • Ability to situate projects cyber security within the broader SFUSD and DoT contexts, according to competing demands, needs, and priorities within project plans, timelines, and resource allocations.
  • Provide recommendations and guidance for security governance during the procurement and development stages of software systems, networks, and data centers ,as well as incoming project and contract requests.
  • Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.
  • Keep up-to-date on emerging cyber security compliance, assessments, organizational policies.threats, risks, technologies, and methodologies.

Manage to Results

  • Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals, objectives, and strategic plan; establish schedules and methods for delivering specialized services within designated timeframes; implement policies and procedures.
  • Facilitate the development and improvement of security monitoring and incident response processes and solutions as required to support cyber security needs within SFUSD.
  • Provide a coordinated response to complex cyber-attacks; identify threats and develop suitable defense measures, evaluate system changes for security implications, and recommend enhancements; research and draft cyber security white papers.
  • Operate security monitoring and incident response tool sets with a focus on continuous improvement; monitor for attacks, intrusions, vulnerabilities, and risks.
  • Validates and assists in the implementation of security controls and procedures in acquisition, development, and change management lifecycle of information systems,
  • Research and recommend solutions for disaster recovery, incident response,and digital forensics.
  • Run vulnerability valuation and review protocols, hardware, and software for SFUSD.
  • Review and assess project, contract, and procurement requests to ensure alignment with cyber security best practices and SFUSD’s cyber security standards, including access/permission management, system integration, and data sharing.
  • Develop and facilitate user training for cyber security related solutions and related change management.
  • Performs and coordinates internal and third party risk and compliance assessments.
  • Prioritize and problem solve tasks in line with the district’s cyber security roadmap and critical needs.

Manage Teams

  • Coordinate the work of multi-disciplinary staff and team members which may cross more than one department, technical, and functional areas with and without direct supervision.
  • Manage the performance and accountability of technical staff, including contractors and employees.
  • Identify and eliminate blockers and obstacles to progress and delivery on cross-functional projects.

Manage Relationships

  • Ensure stakeholders from the Board, to C-level staff to school leadership are appropriately and regularly kept informed of progress.
  • Collaborate and communicate fluently and effectively with diverse stakeholders, including district administrators, Chief-level leaders, business owners, and technical teams including developers, engineers, database administrators, architects, and engineers.
  • Demonstrate the ability to facilitate various stakeholder meetings
  • Interface with partner vendors and consultants, associated with projects to help them understand the SFUSD culture, processes and procedures, and nomenclature.
  • Manage relationships with software vendors and integration partners
  • Translate technical complexity into ‘accessible’ language for a wide audience to support buy-in and adoption.
  • Drive effective teamwork, communication, collaboration and commitment across multiple disparate groups with competing priorities.
  • Communicate with internal and external teams, stakeholders and partners on a regular basis. Ensure all parties have accurate and current information.

Desired Qualifications

  • Certification in cyber security and/or information security technology
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with principles and practices of application architecture, cyber security, networks, servers, databases, and analysis.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of project management and organization.
  • Six years relevant experience, including penetration testing, intrusion detection, incident response, and/or digital forensics.
  • Experience in a large, urban, K12 school district or other educational or government setting is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:An associate degree in computer science or a closely related field from an accredited college or university OR its equivalent in terms of total course credits/units [i.e., at least sixty (60) semester or ninety (90) quarter credits/units with a minimum of twenty (20) semester or thirty (30) quarter credits/units in computer science or a closely-related field].

Experience:Five (5) years of experience in the information systems field, including system analysis, business process design, development and implementation of business application solutions or IT project management.

Substitution:Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of two (2) years). One (1) year is equivalent to thirty (30) semester units / forty-five (45) quarter units with a minimum of 10 semester / 15 quarter units in computer science or a closely related field.
