As the Manager of select Digital District Projects (0992) you will report to a senior leader within the Department of Technology and manage various technology projects in our Digital District portfolio. The strongest candidates will have both a solid technical foundation to successfully implement technology-enabled projects and the ability to bridge technical and non-technical requirements to ensure a user-centered approach to design and implementation. Critical in this role is the ability to work with all divisions in the Department of Technology (DoT), and non-technical stakeholders and business owners across the District, to help ensure that we deliver transformational work that supports our teaching and learning goals in Transform Learning. Transform Lives. as well as our long-term, city-wide North Star, Vision 2025.

We expect our Senior Manager of Digital District Projects to:

Demonstrate a Leadership Mindset

  • Strategically execute projects in our Digital District portfolio across the district and broader community during the planning and implementation phases for a variety of systems. Example projects from the portfolio include:
    • Medium to large technology system integration projects
    • Medium to large product acquisition and deployment projects
  • Successful experience preparing and monitoring project budgets, contracts, RFPs, and resource/staffing allocations, including controlling project costs and occasionally obtaining additional resources
  • Develop and implement strategic communications and change management plans with the ability to garner buy-in and support across the organization to implement effectively
  • Facilitate and/or manage the development and approval of technical and functional requirements that balance resource constraints and user-centered design
  • Develop training plans for project staff during development and for all users at implementation
  • Ability to situate projects within the broader SFUSD and DoT contexts, according to competing demands, needs, and priorities within project plans, timelines, and resource allocations.
  • Manage go-live deployment of the new system(s)/tools/platforms and facilitate projects from implementation to transition to operations through every stage of the project.

  • Develop comprehensive and detailed project plans and monitor assigned project plans to ensure goals are clear, measurable, and connected to the DoT/PMO vision
  • Facilitate or monitor the cross-functional project committees to share and evaluate ongoing progress, and hold business owners accountable for meeting these goals
  • Managing the projects to successfully design and build systems that interface with other technology systems within our district.
  • Anticipate project bottlenecks, provide escalation management, anticipate and make tradeoffs, and help balance the business needs versus technical constraints.
  • Work within and consistently meet tight deadlines.
  • Prioritize and problem solve tasks in line with current district priorities.

Manage Teams

  • Coordinate the work of multi-disciplinary staff and team members which may cross more than one department, technical, and functional areas with and without direct supervision
  • Manage the performance and accountability of project staff, including contractors and employees;
  • Identify and eliminate blockers and obstacles to progress and delivery on cross-functional projects

Manage Relationships

  • Ensure stakeholders from the Board, to C-level staff to school leadership are appropriately and regularly kept informed of project progress.
  • Collaborate and communicate fluently and effectively with diverse stakeholders, including district administrators, Chief-level leaders, business owners, and technical teams including developers, engineers, database administrators, architects, and engineers;
  • Demonstrate the ability to facilitate various stakeholder meetings
  • Interface with partner vendors and consultants, associated with projects to help them understand the SFUSD culture, processes and procedures, and nomenclature.
  • Manage relationships with software vendors and integration partners
  • Translate technical innovation and software/hardware complexity into ‘accessible’ language for a wide audience.
  • Drive effective teamwork, communication, collaboration and commitment across multiple disparate groups with competing priorities.
  • Communicate with internal and external teams, stakeholders and partners on a regular basis. Ensure all parties have accurate and current information.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or other related field and two years of experience implementing and managing integrated information systems projects, and
  • Three years of experience implementing and managing integrated information/technology systems

Substitution: Education requirement may be substituted for additional professional-level experience on a year-for-year basis.

Desired Qualifications

  • Certification in project management, agile product management, or process improvement methodology is preferred.
  • Six years relevant experience, including significant project/portfolio management in a complexenvironment
  • Experience in a large, urban school district or other educational or government setting is preferred;
