Rigor by Design, Not Chance: Supporting Deeper Thinking Through Actionable Instruction and Assessment

Online Dec 13 11:00 am to 1:00 pm - Eastern Time (US & Canada)

Price: $51 to $250

Today, we expect every student to be ready for challenges of the 21st century—to learn more, to master new technologies, to understand more deeply, and to transfer what they've learned to real-world contexts. Integrating 5 evidence-based "teacher moves" in an Actionable Assessment Cycle can build a supportive classroom culture for deeper thinking and self-directed learning. A range of strategies appropriate for all students will be modeled and practiced for each teacher move: asking probing questions, building schemas, considering strategic scaffolding, developing complex tasks, and engaging students in metacognition and reflection.

Learning Outcomes:

Participant will

  • Explore the cognitive science behind deeper engagement that promotes student-driven learning.
  • Analyze "actionable" (formative and performance) assessment examples used within an Actionable Assessment Cycle.
  • Practice using the Rigor by Design tools when planning a lesson or observing learning in classrooms.
  • Describe how metacognition and reflection strategies appropriate to any grade level or content area create a more equitable classroom culture.
