Part 2: Teaching for Deeper Learning: Tools to Engage Students in Meaning Making

Online Oct 24 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm - Eastern Time (US & Canada)

Price: $51 to $250

Join best-selling ASCD authors, Jay McTighe and Harvey Silver, as they discuss ideas from their book, Teaching for Deeper Learning: Tools to Engage Students in Meaning Making. Deep learning occurs when learners are actively engaged in making meaning of content. When students have learned something deeply, they retain information, achieve conceptual understanding, and can transfer their learning to new situations. However, deep learning doesn't occur on its own as a result of didactic teaching; rather, it requires the active mental manipulation of content using higher-order thinking skills.

During this two-part webinar series, Jay and Harvey will explore a set of important questions:

  • What is deeper learning and why is it important?
  • How does deep learning occur?
  • What's worth learning deeply?
  • How should curriculum be framed to promote deeper learning?
  • What kinds of instruction will help students learn deeply?

The authors will then present a set of practical and proven instructional tools and strategies to help students make meaning, build deep understanding, and transfer their learning from school into the world beyond.

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will learn

  • How to frame modern curriculum around conceptually "big ideas" that are worth understanding deeply.
  • How to incorporate teaching techniques that will help students actively make meaning to deepen understanding of key concepts and processes.
  • How to apply set of practical and proven tools and strategies for building students' capacity for meaning making, deep learning, and long-term transfer.

Schedule
