Powerful Student Care elevates educators by challenging practices and structures that demoralize and dehumanize us and our students. Inviting us to acknowledge our own humanity and the humanity of all others, it helps us to reimagine schooling as a fundamentally humane endeavor, in which we reconsider how our students experience school, and as a consequence, how we experience teaching.
In this session, Grant and Kathleen will introduce five concrete tenets for developing the kind of community that humanizes schooling. These tenets, outlined in their April 2023 book Powerful Student Care: Honoring Each Learner as Distinctive and Irreplaceable, provide an alternative to traditional notions of "classroom management," bring coherence to the many ways we are asked to care for students, and put us back in touch with the reasons we became educators.
