Engagement Pedagogy: Designing Instruction So Students Connect to the Content, Their Work, and Each Other

Authentic engagement means building a fulfilling relationship with someone or something important. For students, authentic engagement means building relationships with the content, their work and each other. The teacher's role is to design instruction so students can build those authentic relationships.

During this workshop, we will first collaboratively define what we mean by authentic engagement. Then, we'll explore a model for engagement pedagogy, which includes 10 elements of instructional design that empower students to connect authentically to the content, their work, and each other.

A workshop on engagement means participants will engage, so come prepared to do some reflective writing, have small group discussions, and share in the larger group. By experiencing some of what authentic engagement looks and feels like, participants will be better prepared to design learning environments that empower students to engage.
