Teaching Thinking Brains; Promoting Reasoning, Critical Thinking, Problems Solving, and Knowledge Skills for an Age of Automation and Misinformation

Students today face a world full of social media falsehoods, future jobs that require critical thinking skills, and rising economic, societal, and global problems that need solutions.

A Future of Jobs 2020 Report released by the World Economic Forum warned that by 2025, workers across the world faced the “double disruption” of job losses caused by increased automation and the economic impact of the Coronavirus pandemic, and found that the need for critical thinking, analysis, and complex problem-solving are among the top skills to grow in prominence among employers over the next five years. Yet a 2019 MindEdge Survey found that 74% of millennials and 69% of college students failed to pass a quiz on critical thinking skills.

A 2018 study by the MIT Sloan School found that falsehoods are 70% more likely to be retweeted on Twitter than truth. Yet studies show many children lack the basic skills needed to distinguish fact from fiction. A 2019 report from the Stanford Higher Education Group found the majority of the 9-12th graders in the study lacked basic digital evaluation skills and two-thirds couldn’t tell the difference between news stories and ads, while a 2019 study by Reboot Foundation revealed that over a third of middle schoolers say they “rarely” or “never” learn how to judge the reliability of media sources.

This conference will explore the brain science behind critical thinking, reasoning, knowledge, and media misinformation. Discover strategies for improving reasoning and critical thinking skills; develop media literacy and analysis; reduce the knowledge gap; promote metacognition; connect the brain and body to thinking, and develop analytical, creative, and design thinking skills needed to solve complex problems.
