BetterLesson was founded in 2008 in Cambridge, Mass., by a group of former teachers from Boston and Atlanta. Co-founders Alex Grodd (CEO) and Erin Osborn (COO) wanted to find a way to share the most innovative lesson plans and classroom resources so that teachers wouldn’t have to reinvent the wheel every time they started to prepare to teach a lesson. Grodd had been a Teach For America corps member.
As of late 2013, BetterLesson has received almost $10 million in funding as investments and grants. Investors, who contributed $1.6 million in a Sept. 2011 series A round, include Highland Capital Partners, General Catalyst Partners, New Markets Venture Partners, Steve Kaufer, Matt Greenfield and NewSchools Venture Funds. Grants have come to BetterLesson from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation ($3.5 million) and the National Education Association ($3.6 million). The company, which is based in Cambridge, Mass., employs about 20 people; its site receives more than 300,000 monthly visitors.
