NY Revs the Edtech Scene

Augmented reality lessons, one-to-one language tutoring via video and an app that helps students create portfolios of their extracurricular work will be among the highlighted startups during the NY Edtech Week, "a global education innovation festival in New York City celebrating education entrepreneurship," slated to take place at New York University from Dec. 19-21.

Although not a full week, the program aims to combine TED-style talks, shark tanks, panels and a pitch session from the nine teams of education innovators who have gone through the program, which is managed by StartEd Companies.

Fresh from the bootcamp are:

  • Admission Table: An app that aims to connect aspiring students with university counselors who can provide advice about their applications. Geared to international students applying to US colleges and universities.
  • Alumnify: A professional networking app that helps university graduates build stronger networks among fellow alumni.
  • Aug That! -- an augmented reality approach to lessons (including a dinosaur scavenger hunt game);
  • Bering: A data analytics platform that aspires to be a kind of Crunchbase of scientists and will enable donors, for instance, to identify and support scientists based on metrics about their work.
  • Edukids: A customized childcare program, started in 1989, for children ages 6 weeks to 11 years old;
  • Neuronet Learning: A research-based learning readiness program, created by audiologist Nancy Rowe, designed to help students develop fluency in essential reading, math, and handwriting skills.
  • The Talk List: Online, one-to-one language tutoring delivered through a video platform. (People can opt to be tutored or to become a tutor).
  • TrovVit: An online portfolio app that enables students to capture and share their extracurriculular activities.
  • VersityU: (Site not yet available).

Panel topics range from early childhood, to higher ed and corporate learning to big data accountability, on December 20, which will be moderated by EdSurge's Betsy Corcoran and include Bart Epstein, CEO of the Jefferson Education Accelerator.

Tickets are priced as high as $995 at the door. EdSurge, which is a media partner of the event, has 10 free passes that we're eager to share. First come, first serve to those dropping us a note at feedback@edsurge.com with subject line: CU in NY!
